Vaccinations: Take 1

Today was Truman's first doctor's appointment with his physician in Greensboro. Daddy was working so Momma had to take him on her own. Overall, the appointment went well. Truman checked in at 78th percentile for weight, 50th percentile for height, and 50th percentile for head circumference. His new doctor declared him to be in excellent health. Luckily, I really liked his doctor. She was recommended to me by a coworker, one of the main reasons being that 7 months ago she adopted her daughter from Ethiopia. It was great to have a physician who knows exactly what we are going through - it really made me feel comfortable and made her advice seem that much better :-) She was also able to hook us up with a connection to a local group of fellow adoptive parents, so I am really excited about future get togethers!

The only downside to the appointment was that Truman had to start getting his vaccinations. While we are pretty sure he had some in Ethiopia (like the BCG), we don't have any record of them so we have to start from scratch. Today he got 4 shots - Hep B, Flu, Pneumococcal, and DTaP. It was a little rough, but Truman handled it like a champ (I think I was more upset than he was!) They also ordered more bloodwork (ick!) so we'll have to go get that done next week - I will definitely be bringing Shea along for that one as I don't do well with all these needles!

After we got home, Truman got pretty cranky and started running a bit of a fever. After some baby Tylenol and a lot of rocking, he feel asleep for the night at 5pm. I have a feeling we'll be paying for that later, but after the trauma of the day I'm just happy he's comfortable and sleeping! Man, we love that little boy more than life itself!!!

The Great Sippy-Cup Experiment

Yesterday we tried out Truman's sippy-cup for the first time. We wanted to see how he'd react to this new contraption, so we put some formula in it and let him have at it. As you can see, Truman was definitely intrigued by the cup, but there seemed to be a bit more chewing and licking than there was drinking. We were, however, impressed by his ability to hold the cup up with both hands just like a big boy! Once he figures out how to tip the cup up high enough for formula to come how, he'll be all set :-)

Truman Rocking

Truman is really good at scooting backwards and is getting so close to crawling! The other day he backed himself into a corner and then this cuteness ensued.
(Be forewarned that this video is long - I just thought it was all so sweet and couldn't decide what to cut, so I left it all in.)

Truman Cruises for Toys

Hmm, we might have an early walker on our hands... :-)

More Family!

We have been very lucky that our families have been so willing to make the long flight or drive down from NY to NC to visit Truman. Last weekend, it was Grandma Simmons turn and she brought along Great-Grandma Bleir! It was a short trip, but filled with lots of fun! Truman seems to really enjoy getting to know other people and had a great time playing with his family. Here are some of our favorite pics from this weekend!

It's Official!

Today we received Truman's official Certificate of Citizenship from the US government, which means he is officially a US Citizen! Included was a fun, photoshopped picture of our beautiful boy that was taken in Ethiopia (they photoshopped out his tuft of hair in order to get a completely white background - now we know what he would look like if we cut his curls!):

Next step, readoption in NC in order to get a US Birth Certificate!

21 Pounds!

When we first met Truman at the end of June he weighed in at 12.1 pounds. Now, a mere 2-1/2 months later, he is up to 21 pounds! That means he went from the 1st percentile for weight to the 80th! We are having such a fun time watching Truman grow and it's great to see him with little rolls on his legs and belly :-) We feel so lucky that he is healthy and thriving. Here are some pics of our boy - enjoy the beautiful chubbiness (and take note of the fun curls growing in)!

Bernard Family Gathering!

Last weekend, Truman was lucky enough to get more family visitors - this time it was his Great-Grandma Bernard, Great Aunt Kathy, Grandpa Bernard, and Grandpa's girlfriend, Mary. Truman enjoyed getting to meet new people - he especially loved trying to grab his Great-Grandma's glasses!

Overall, we had a very fun time. While sometimes it's difficult to be living in NC while all of our family are in NY, we've been so lucky that everyone has made such an effort to come down and meet the newest addition to the family :-) Here are some pics from the weekend:

Baby Food!

Several people have been asking us about Truman's eating habits, so we thought we would give a quick update. For those of you who know Shea and me, you know that we love to cook, so it was kind of natural that we decided to make all of Truman's food. So far, it's been really easy! We bought a cookbook called "Blender Baby Foods" and have been making simple fruits and veggies for T. As of tonight, we've made bananas, plums, cantaloupe, peaches, peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, and corn. We've got a whole system down where we make large quantities of each food and then freeze them in baby-sized portions. Here's a picture of what our kitchen often looks like nowadays:

And our freezer system:

So far, Truman has enjoyed every single food we've tried (he really is such a sweet, easy baby). Hopefully he'll continue to be a little adventurer when it comes to food :-) Truman's schedule with food looks something like this:
Breakfast: 2oz fruit with 1 Tbsp rice cereal
Lunch: 2oz fruit or veggie
Dinner: 2oz veggie with 1 Tbsp rice cereal
And he eats formula on demand throughout the day.

Here's a short video of him enjoying one of his favorites, peaches!

Johnny Jump Up

Truman really loves to jump up and down when in his Exersaucer, so we decided to try out the Johnny Jump Up that his Grandma Simmons gave to us. Sadly, it didn't go very well. Truman just kept spinning in circles and never really got into the bouncing motion. Here are some pictures where Truman seems to be saying "Mommy, why am I in this strange device?"

Maybe we'll try again another time...

Happy Boy

Here are some pictures of our happy boy from this week - he's now 7 months old!:
